My online search led me to the definition of "life on the fast lane" which means, to lead a risk-filled, thrill-seeking, hedonistic lifestyle. Being hedonistic is to engage in the pursuit of pleasure; sensually self-indulgent.
This phrase typically describes modern lifestyle today. All over the world, in every aspect of life and living, there is an insatiable, unquenchable desire for more. Whilst this desire is not entirely bad as it has been the driving force behind civilisation, science and technology, it has also impacted negatively on our society in many ways.
Never in our history have we attained this rate and height of pervertedness. Our cultural values are fast melting under the heat of western lifestyle. The subtle influence of western media and entertainment is shaping the minds of our children, leaving them more disillusioned than ever before. We are living our lives on the fast lane with the consequent social breakdown; ever increasing crime rate, high prevalence and incidence of HIV/AIDS, rape, unwanted pregnancies and abortions.
Our society is gradually at home with hitherto labelled mental disorders such as homosexuality, sexual immorality, drug abuse, body arts and modifications etc. The dogged quest for more fun, more thrill and in actual sense, more abnormality has hit record high.
It is obvious that we have run out of the normal and I'm afraid to say, the church – the "cool head of the society", the "opium of the people" have joined the bandwagon of fun seekers. Most have succumbed to the pressure for more; more miracles, more drama, louder sound, bigger sophisticated worship theatres, more swag – more thrill! All those for more members which translates into more money and fame.
More churches nowadays are doing well in playing catchup with the pace of modern societal lifestyle on the fast lane. Others though, are contempted to be left behind with the "old time religion" which is boring to this generation of "tecno" christians. Boring it may, but God is "the same yesterday, today and forevermore", "He changeth not".
The church is "the salt of the earth. But if the salt losses it's saltiness, how can it be made salty again?" There is a desperate need for revival and reformation, and this will only be possible if we return back to the basic founding principles of Christianity; preaching salvation through acceptance of Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection.
It's high time we put back the Christ in Christianity. Then and only then, will the light of the church shine through this fast encroaching darkness of modern life.
