Nigeria marks 500 days since Chibok girls' abduction

Relatives of over 200 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram mark 500 days since the abductions with hope dwindling for their rescue despite a renewed push to end the armed group's rebellion.
The landmark on Thursday comes amid a security crisis in northeastern Nigeria, where fighters have killed more than 1,000 people since the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari in May.
Boko Haram fighters stormed the Government Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok in Borno state on the evening of April 14 last year, seizing 276 girls who were preparing for end-of-year exams.
Fifty-seven escaped but nothing has been heard of the 219 others since May last year, when about 100 of them appeared in a Boko Haram video.
Nigeria's abduction saga
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has since said they have all converted to Islam and been "married off".
Parents of the missing girls are unhappy at what they see as a lack of inadequate effort from their government.
"The government's response has been very slow. If these girls were their biological daughters I don't think they would still be missing. It's because they don't care about the poor," Esther Yakubu, mother of a missing girl, said.
Buhari says his government will not stop looking for the girls.
Shehu Garba, a presidential spokesperson, said there has been "intensified intelligence gathering and reconnaissance in a given location in the northeast".
"In the past, government had contended with intelligence that was very peripheral. I think we're getting something deeper and clearer and more specific," he told Al Jazeera.
The mass abduction brought the brutality of the rebellion unprecedented worldwide attention and prompted a viral social media campaign demanding their release backed by personalities from US First Lady Michelle Obama to the actress Angelina Jolie.
An 8,700-strong Multi-National Joint Task Force, drawing in Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and Benin, is expected to go into action soon.
In a report published in April, Amnesty International quoted a senior military officer as saying the girls were being held at various Boko Haram camps, including in Cameroon and possibly Chad.

David Mark to testify at Election Tribunal on August 18
Mark was dragged to the tribunal by his only contender, Daniel Onjeh of the All Progressesive Congress (APC) over his declaration by INEC as the winner of the Benue South Senatorial election.
Onjeh had argued that the elections were marred by electoral malpractices and substantial breaches of the Electoral Act 2011 as amended.
He also averred that INEC officials were compromised and voters were financially induced by the PDP agents at the various polling units in the district.
The petitioner, therefore, urged the court to nullify the election and order for fresh poll.
Mark's counsel, Mr Kenneth Ikonne, had told the tribunal on Thursday that his client would be appearing in person to testify during the next adjourned date to enable him close his case.
Ikonne had also called five witnesses who testified that the elections were free and fair.
The witnesses denied financial inducement of voters as alleged by petitioner.
However, under cross-examination by petitioner's counsel, Mr Tunji Oso, one of the witnesses, Mr Abuh Adesi, admitted that card readers were used to accredit voters in his polling unit.
Adesi had earlier deposed in his written statement that incident forms were used for accreditation instead of card readers in his polling unit.
At the end of the testimonies and cross-examinations, Ikonne prayed for an adjournment, promising to close his case with the testimony of Mark.
The tribunal Chairman, Justice Mosumola Dipeolu, adjourned the case till Aug.18, for further defence.

Benue to Support Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre
He spoke at the 21st anniversary of the centre at the Our Lady of Aokpe Mediatrix of All Ages.
Ortom, who was represented by Director of Tourism, Mrs Dooter Ajoko, reiterated his administration's commitment to promote tourism, saying that the government takes pilgrimage seriously and has spent much on sponsoring people on pilgrimage.
He said tourism is a big money spinner which can boost the economic fortunes of a country.
He said indices abound of what countries such as Kenya, Gambia, Bahamas and cities like Calabar benefit from their investment in tourism.
He stressed that time had come for a diversification of the economy from the mono-oil economy to a multi-economy and that tourism is one of the preferred sectors.
"The Aokpe apparition ground has become a prominent religious tourist site/destination that deserves international attention and which I believe the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation would project considering its significance as a pilgrimage centre. The importance of pilgrimage to Christianity and Islamic religion cannot be over-emphaised. If you consider the volume of pilgrims who troop to Mecca, Jerusalem and Rome for pilgrimage viz-a-viz the monetary value on the economy, and you imagine that replicated here in Aopke, not only would the rural economy get a boost but the state and country at large would benefit from the multiplier effects of these," he said.
Ortom stressed that as soon as the pilgrimage centre is authenticated, some of the pilgrims would come and perform their religious duties at Aopke, noting that government is very willing and ready to provide the necessary enabling environment for the realisation of authentication of Aokpe as a pilgrimage centre.
Director-General, Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Sally Uwechue Mbanefo, said Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre is one of the many religious sites in Nigeria that needs to be promoted within and outside the country. She noted that NTDC in line with its statutory mandate recognises and identifies Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre as a religious tourism site worthy of recognition and onward publicity on the corporation's website to attract more foreign pilgrims all over the globe.
"This will form part of religious tourism like the Winners' Shiloh and Redeemed Church convention which hold every December in Ota and Lagos respectively. In view of the importance of this site to the good people of Benue State, Aokpe community and Nigeria at large, I hereby approve and authenticate Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre as religious tourism site under the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation Act which encourages religious tourism in Nigeria," she added.
Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism Mr Sekav Dzua Iyortyom recalled that 20 years ago, the story of apparition in Aokpe of mother Mary started and her consistent appearance to Christiana Inebu Agbo. He noted that there were apparitions in Mexico, France, Portugal, Egypt and Rwanda but that 'our own joy today is that we are also recognised by nature to see with our own eyes what we used to hear.'
"Today, as Aokpe comes on the Nigerian Tourism map, we should expect that the world would also come here to our door step just as we go to Israel and Mecca for pilgrimage. God in His infinite mercy has provided us what we have been praying for, it is now left for us to sustain it," he added.
Mrs. Ajoko assured that the government was determined to develop tourism as income from oil has continued to dwindle. She said tourism is one of the priority areas the new administration is given attention to generate income alongside agriculture, entrepreneurship development and creating enabling environment for industry to strive.
She said Aokpe is of interest to the state because it has spent much money on pilgrims to abroad. "With Aokpe, government intends to promote it to encourage domestic tourism instead of spending foreign exchange on pilgrimage abroad. Unfortunately, not many people in Benue are aware of the centre at Aokpe. So, the government wants to promote and develop the centre," she said.
According to her, the state government has concluded plans to revive the Makurdi airport and construct the access road to Aokpe recalling that past administrations in the state started the seven kilometre Ugbokolo-Aokpe road project, which was abandoned. Mrs Ajoko praised Mrs Sally Mbanefo led Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) for the promotion of domestic tourism, which she said, has lots of multiplier effects on job creation.
Director Benue State Council for Arts and Culture, Mr Terseer Aernyi, assured that tourism can drive the economy because the state has all it takes – cuisine, dance and folklore to offer tourists. He however observed that for Aokpe Pilgrimage Centre to thrive, the road leading to it should be made accessible and conducive for pilgrims. He added that government is keen in turning the centre around as one of the best in Africa.
On what kept the state troupe successful, he said: "We have had lots of encouragement from successive administrations. That has been our source of strength and it forces us to do more."
The visionary Mrs Christiana Agbo Ejeh, a lawyer, said the Blessed Virgin Mary started appearing to her since 1992 when she was 12 and that Virgin Mary told her She would appear on August 4, 1994 to bestow grace on her children.
"Virgin Mary told me that every August 4 should be set aside to celebrate a special day of grace," she said.

IME ACCEPTS TO WITHDRAW CASE AGAINST ORTOM, ISSUES PRESS RELEASE
This followed the intervention and persuasion by President Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Tanko Almakura, Hon Aminu Tambuwal and speaker of the house of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara amongst others.
Earlier todayat Sen JKN Waku's house in Abuja, some elders from Benue State held a meeting with Hon Dogara who pleaded with Hon Jime and Waku to embrace peace and drop the case.
Below, the Press Release by the Rt Hon Emmanuel Jime Gubernatorial Campaign.
IN THE FIGHT FOR JUSTICE, WE HAVE MADE A HUGE SACRIFICE.
The justice we fought for was never about one candidate; it was about tomorrow being better. It was about avoiding a repeat of yesterday. Finally satisfied with the acknowledgement of the genuineness of our grievances and trusting a truly honourable man completely deserving of our total belief that he would bring sanity to all institutions, we make this one sacrifice by continuing the course of justice through alternative and legitimate channels. We note with high hopes, the fundamental changes our President shall bring to our party and to our nation. We will not like to be counted as one of those whose personal ambitions stood in the way of the progress he is committed to.
We, accordingly, give commensurate consideration to Mr. President's series of fatherly entreaties. His clear understanding of what we fight for helped in no small measure in addressing our grouse especially with vivid assurances to rid our party of any tendency that elevates imposition and impunity.
Long ago, the offer of a House of Reps ticket was meant to settle our grievances. But that would only have meant that lessons are not learnt and impunity is compensated by impunity in yet another process and contest we were not even an aspirant in. We rejected the offer. Therefore, we insisted that lessons be learnt and assurances of a no repeat be extracted. We are confident we are at that stage now. Lessons are learnt; assurances extracted.
For the avoidance of doubt, we have always believed that we earnestly have a genuine and sound case notwithstanding any challenges and limiting factors we were likely to face in court.
We regret nothing. We are happy to have stood for something wherein our grievances have been acknowledged and fully appreciated by even the highest office in the land.
In the end, our stance for what is right has not waned; we believe our party, the APC shall be an exemplar of the change she professes. We commit ourselves to making this happen. For that, there is no sacrifice too big.
We salute the eminent role played by Alh. Waziri Tambuwal, Executive Governor of Sokoto State and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara in whom the President has trusted to lead today's efforts in complementing Mr President's efforts in this saga.
To those we led on this journey, we are grateful for your continued support, prayers and steadfastness. In your numbers, we saw the good in our people and their readiness to support a good cause. We applaud that. We urge you to always walk with your shoulders high. We would not have let go if we didn't think we have extracted enough assurances that tomorrow would be better for Benue. Never again shall this mundane legacy of imposition be allowed to rear its ugly head in Benue State. For that was, after all, our ultimate goal. We count on your understanding always. We are grateful, we remain indebted to you.

Angry Mob Destroys South Africa Snake Pastor’s Church, Set It On Fire
According to South African media, members of the Julius Malema-led Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party on Sunday joined up with Soshanguve residents of Pretoria to burn down the church belonging to Penuel Mnguni, a pastor who recently made the news in South Africa for making congregants eat rats and snakes. I posted about his wedding yesterday HERE.
The EFF brigade had vowed to make Penuel Mnguni eat rodents and snakes like he did to his congregation. Luckily for him, he wasn't at the church for Sunday's service. Rather an unidentified second-in-command of the pastor took over the service, which had spilled onto the street, and commanded members to eat leaves. Videos of them eating leaves today are after the cut.
Mnguni's absence did not stop the EFF from wreaking havoc on the premises. They tore down the churches tent before setting it alight and forced the congregation to disperse. According to an eyewitness:
"Residents and members of EFF were enraged when a man on the podium continued with the services while they were inquiring about the whereabouts of the pastor," said an eyewitness.
They then decided to burn down the tent where the church service is normally held and within minutes, the tent was ablaze. There was also an exchange of blows between congregants and residents.
Despite the disruptions, the congregation vowed to continue with the service. Police were said to have monitored the situation from a few hundred metres away.
Mnguni's church made headlines in July after pictures went viral showing him feeding a live snake to his congregation. He was arrested on charges of animal cruelty.

I started as a motor park tout, today I’m Governor – Ortom Testifies At RCCG Convention
Governor Ortom gave the testimony in appreciation of what God has done in his life, particularly during the last elections. According to him, he dropped out of secondary school in 1979 and had to take to distant learning and tutorials to go through all levels of education and to the point of Doctorate degree. "I dropped out of school at form two in 1979.
After my encounter with the All Sufficient God, today through tutorials, distant learning, I have a Ph.D. I started out as a motor park tout, I passed through leadership positions in the various local and state levels and then I became the mininster for Industry, Trade and Investment at the federal level and later supervising minister of aviation.
''God also directed me to contest for the 2015 governorship elections, though I had no money, I went ahead and today I am the Executive Governor of Benue State because God has decided to give me a testimony','' he added.
Also at the convention, were the Vice president of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbanjo, Executive Governor of Ondo state, Olusegun Mimiko, Chief of Defence Staff, Abayomi Olonisaki, among others.
Man arraigned for defiling 11 year old daughter in Benue
Vanguard learned that the accused was arrested a few days ago after allegedly engaging the girl in days of repeated sexual abuse whenever his wife was away from home.
He was, however, caught in the act by a neighbour, who heard the cry of the girl, while she was allegedly being sexually abused, in one of his escapades.
The neighbour was said to have called the attention of his wife to the development. She examined her daughter and, convinced that she had been defiled, reported the matter to the police.
At the hearing yesterday, police prosecutor, Inspector Hyacinth Gbakun, told the court that the accused contravened Section 91 of the Penal Code and the laws of Benue State.
However, no plea was taken for want of jurisdiction, but the prosecuting officer asked for an adjournment to allow the police carry out further investigations.
In her ruling, the presiding judge, Mrs. Cecilia Bakara, ordered that the accused be remanded at Makurdi Federal Prison and adjourned the case to September 29.
Pastor Sentenced To One Year In Prison After Refusing To Marry Gay Couple
A pastor at the Christian Proctor Church in Vermont, has been sentenced to one year in federal prison after refusing to marry gay couples. This comes shortly after theSupreme Court's 5-4 decisionruling that states must allow gay-marriage.
The Christian Pastor, 56-year-old Paul Horner, had his lawyer speak to reporters on his behalf.
"We are currently disputing the guilty verdict and I am confident my client will be a free man here shortly," said attorney Tom Downey. "Horner was just using his best judgement according to his rights and religious freedom in this country."
The Honorable Myron Danus handed down the harsh sentence.
"Religious freedom goes both ways, Mr. Horner," Danus told a packed courtroom. "It is not your place to deny individuals the same rights that everyone else has, rights that were passed down and agreed upon in a court of law, the ultimate court, the Supreme Court. It is not your decision whether or not you agree with the law but more importantly that you follow it and enforce it."
According to the criminal investigation, the Christian Proctor Church is registered with the state as a "religious corporation" limited to performing "one-man-one-woman marriages as defined by the Holy Bible."
But the church is also registered as a for-profit business and city officials said that means the owners must comply with state and federal regulations.
Steve Shand president of the Vermont Family Research Committee, said it is "open season on Americans who refuse to bow to the government's redefinition of marriage."
"Homosexuals are gay," Shand told reporters. "Why should Christian ministers be forced to perform and celebrate any marriage that conflicts with their beliefs? It's a slippery slope my friend. Pretty soon these same pastors will be forced to wed animals or kitchen appliances. This is not my America!"
Gwen Hawkins who is president of the LGBT Pride Center in Vermont said she is happy with the guilty verdict.
"We just want the same rights as everyone else and this guilty verdict sets a great precedent," Hawkins said. "These fanatical Christians base their life on one verse in the Bible but they seem to forget the other 99% of the verses in the book. For example, why can't we stone to death Bristol Palin for having a baby out of wedlock? And what about her mother, Sarah Palin, breaking the rules of Corinthians 14:34 which clearly state that as a woman, she is not allowed to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. But no, they like to pick the one verse in the Bible about gay people and build their camp around it."
Proctor is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,741 at the 2010 census. Proctor is home to the Vermont Marble Museum and Wilson Castle.
BREAKING NEWS: Ambode Sacks New Taskforce Chairman
Reason for his sack was not stated but sources said it has to do with shady deals while in office as taskforce chariman, a position he was appointed into late June 2015.
The news of his removal filtered in on Friday evening as staff in the taskforce were shocked.
Ambode has already replaced the sacked Taskforce Chairman with Olubukola Abey, a Superintendent of Police.
There have been reports and complains that places where the. Taskforce had cleared in the past like Obalende and Oshodi were being taken over again by hoodlums.
When he took over as taskforce chairman in June, Adedeji refused to use the spacious office left behind by his predecessor, Bayo Sulaiman and went to carve out another office for himself.
It was gathered that Adedeji feared that he might be harmed if he used the old office, which was why he never stepped in until he was removed as taskforce chairman by Ambode.

Houses Submerged In Makurdi After Heavy Downpour
The areas heavily affected included Demekpe, Wadata Rice mill, Agboughoul village, Mobile Barrack, Achusa village and Logo areas of the town.
The flood, which submerged several houses in the affected areas, reportedly swept away property of many families who battled to save them.
According to reports, the flood became more pronounced due to blocked drainages and non availability of proper drainages in some of the affected communities.
One of the victims of the devastation, in Rice Mill area and a father of three, James Ojudu, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard, said the flood took them by surprise, stressing, "we were actually not prepared for this, because we've not had serious rainfall in Makurdi since this year.
It will be recalled that a few weeks back, the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Water Resources and Environment, Engr. Nathaniel Alaaga, had said that the state government had put measures in place to avert possible flooding of parts of the state in the event of any heavy downpour.
Benue was one of the states affected by the devastating flood of last year.
