Why I was Demoted As A Pastor – True Life Story

My immediate siblings are twin brothers, same
mother and father. November 5, they will mark
their 39yrs of age. Taiwo and Kehinde happily
married and lived comfortably.

Taiwo married a banker while Kehinde married
University non-academic staff. They are both
devoted christians and they both live in same
town.

About a year ago, we lost Taiwo in a fatal
accident and left a surviving wife as widow and
three kids. Six months later, as their senior
brother and the breadwinner of the whole family,
I summoned Kehinde to re-marry Taiwo's wife to
continue playing the role of husband.

Kehinde and Taiwo's wife agreed to marry each
other but Kehinde's wife kicked against the
union. Kehinde only has one child and since 8yrs
now nothing more.

Kehinde's wife got provoked, lashed me with
demeaning words and thereby reported me to
our Church senior pastor at the headquarters and
I was demoted for involving in sacrilegious belief.

It's a shock today again to have received a letter
from the headquarters that I'm no more needed
as pastor in their ministry due to this same issue.

This is a ministry that I had spent a lot towards its
growth. The land our branch was built on was
bought by me alone.

Now, what is my offence?

years filled with joy and happiness.

currently the President of NEPAD Group, World-
Wide, African Business Roundtable (ABR) and
other World Acclaimed Business Conglomerates,
Former Chairman Nigerian Railway Corporation

only African that has been so honoured to
address the United Nations as a Non-Head of
State.

mr ibu addresses homosexuality in nollywood

John ‘Mr Ibu’ Okafor has opened up on his
character in movies as well the issue of
homosexuality in Nollywood.
John ‘Mr Ibu’ Okafor on the set of a movie.
In an interview with Vanguard the actor talked
about how he got the name Mr Ibu from childhood.
He also revealed that he doesn’t prepare for acting
in any special way as it comes naturally to him.
“There is no preparation; it’s an in-built thing. I
love acting, and interpretation of characters given
to me doesn’t really take me time to do. Straight
ahead, I read and interpret my characters and I
enjoy it so much.
On his popular stage name, Mr Ibu, he said: “Ibu
has been my name from childhood. My grandfather
bore the name too and I took after him because as
I was growing up, they used to call me all his
names. On how I got the name in a movie,
somebody was actually writing a script that I was
going to act in. He was using my name as a
character in it and at the end of the day, they titled
the film ‘John Ibu Okafor’. It took me time to
change it from Mr. John Ibu to John Okafor; later I
left it as Mr. Ibu. ”
The comic character said he doesn’t remember
any specific high point in his career as ‘everything
is a high point for [him]’.
He also explained that acting provides enough to
pay the bills.
However; Ibu disclosed that the movie industry is
plagued with homosexuals, people he described as
‘viruses that can kill the spirit in the industry’.
“I fight vehemently against homosexuals; both
gays and lesbians,” he said.
According to the actor, “[In Nollywood] men harass
themselves, and women harass themselves, so
they are wonderfully preparing themselves for the
devil, and I tell you, they will all go to hell.”
He also recounted an experience where he publicly
embarrassed a certain man who had approached
him looking to lure him into homosexuality.
“The man that approached me will never come
close to me again in his life because I humiliated
him publicly. I called him out, and shouted his
name everywhere. Besides, if it was by looks,
nobody would approach me because I’m not fine,”
he said.
The 54-year-old actor is married to Stella Maris
Okafor and is best known for his hilarious
appearances in movies.
What stands out his brand of comedy is how he
often appears as though having a low level of
understanding.

Judge Withdraws From Saraki’s Case [SEE WHY]

Justice Ahmed Mohammed of a Federal
High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday
withdrew from the case filed by Saraki
against the Code of Conduct Tribunal and
the Code of Conduct Bureau.
The court therefore ordered that the case
file should be returned to the Chief Judge of
the FHC, Justice Ibrahim Auta, for re-
assignment.
At the resumed hearing of the case on
Wednesday, Justice Mohammed attributed
his decision to return the case file to what
he described as "negative reports" on the
case.
The judge expressed displeasure at the
reports in the media that he ordered the
CCB and CCT to stop the prosecution of
Saraki, adding that the reports had already
created a negative opinion in the mind of
many Nigerians.
Precisely, two weeks ago, Justice
Mohammed had summoned the CCB and
the CCT over the planned arraignment of
Saraki by the CCB.
Justice Mohammed had while granting the
motion ex parte that was argued before
him, directed the CCB and the CCT to
appear before him on September 21, 2015
and show cause why the interim injunction
being sought by the Senate President
should not be granted.
He also directed that all the plaintiffs should
be served with the motion ex parte and the
accompanied affidavit while hearing notice
should be served on all the respondents.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari
has said he can be impeached if he
interferes in the Code of Conduct Tribunal
case against Saraki over charges of false
assets declaration.
Saraki, on September 11, had been served a
13-count by the Office of the Attorney
General of the Federation. The Senate
President responded by calling it a witch-
hunt.
But in a statement on September 20, the
Presidency denied any responsibility for the
Senate President's trial and described the
attempt to link Buhari to Saraki's trial as
unacceptable.
The Presidency had argued that the trial of
the Senate President was purely a judicial
and constitutional issue.
Buhari, in an interview with Sahara TV,
which was monitored by one of our
correspondents on Wednesday, however,
said he could not interfere in the trial
because it would be unconstitutional to do
so.
He said, "What has the President got to do
with it as a person? The case is in court. Do
Nigerians expect me to tell the Chief Justice
to tell whichever court that they shouldn't
try the Senate President?
"Do Nigerians know the constitution of their
country; that the Legislative, Judiciary and
Executive have got their roles within the
Constitution of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria? Then how do they expect me to
interfere? I can be successfully impeached
if I do it."
Asked if he would pass any vote of
confidence in the Senate President, in the
light of the backing of Saraki by 83 senators
on Tuesday, the President said, "That would
depend on the outcome of the trial."
Responding to questions about his current
relationship with the Senate President,
Buhari said that he had been
communicating with Saraki through letter.
"There are some appointments which the
Senate has to approve and I cannot
remember how many letters I have
personally written to him, because it is
constitutional.
"There are people I want to work with but I
cannot work with them unless the National
Assembly approves. So, I have been writing
to the Senate President and to the Speaker
of the House (of Representatives) and it is
constitutional," he said.

Nigeria At 55: Read Full Text Of President Buhari’s Speech

October 1st is a day for joy and celebrations for us Nigerians whatever the circumstances we find ourselves in because it is the day, 55 years ago; we liberated ourselves from the shackles of colonialism and began our long march to nationhood and to greatness.

No temporary problems or passing challenges should stop us from honoring this day. Let us remind ourselves of the gifts God has given us. Our Creator has bequeathed to us Numbers – Nigeria is the ninth most populated country on the planet. We have in addition:

• Arable land
• Water
• Forests
• Oil and gas
• Coastline
• Solid minerals

We have all the attributes of a great nation. We are not there yet because the one commodity we have been unable to exploit to the fullest is unity of purpose. This would have enabled us to achieve not only more orderly political evolution and integration but also continuity and economic progress.

Countries far less endowed have made greater economic progress by greater coherence and unity of purpose.

Nonetheless, that we have remained together is an achievement we should all appreciate and try to consolidate. We have witnessed this year a sea change in our democratic development. The fact that an opposition party replaced an entrenched government in a free and fair election is indicative of the deeper roots of our democratic system. Whatever one's views are, Nigerians must thank former President Jonathan for not digging-in in the face of defeat and thereby saving the country untold consequences.

As I said in my inaugural speech, I bear no ill will against anyone on past events. Nobody should fear anything from me. We are not after anyone. People should only fear the consequences of their actions. I hereby invite everyone, whatever his or her political view to join me in working for the nation.

My countrymen and women, every new government inherits problems. Ours was no different. But what Nigerians want are solutions, quick solutions not a recitation of problems inherited. Accordingly, after consultations with the Vice President, senior party leaders and other senior stakeholders, I quickly got down to work on the immediate, medium-term and long-term problems which we must solve if we are to maintain the confidence which Nigerians so generously bestowed on us in the March elections and since then.

As you know, I toured the neighboring countries, marshal a coalition of armed forces of the five nations to confront and defeat Boko Haram. I met also the G7 leaders and other friendly presidents in an effort to build an international coalition against Boko Haram. Our gallant armed forces under new leadership have taken the battle to the insurgents, and severely weakened their logistical and infrastructural capabilities. Boko Haram are being scattered and are on the run. That they are resorting to shameless attacks on soft targets such as I.D.P.
camps is indicative of their cowardice and desperation. I have instructed security and local authorities to tighten vigilance in vulnerable places.

On power, government officials have held a series of long sessions over several weeks about the best way to improve the nation's power supply in the safest and most cost effective way. In the meantime, improvement in the power supply is moderately encouraging. By the same token, supply of petrol and kerosene to the public has improved throughout the country. All the early signs are that within months the whole country would begin to feel a change for the better.

Preliminary steps have been taken to sanitize NNPC and improve its operations so that the inefficiency and corruption could be reduced to a minimum. Those of our refineries which can be serviced and brought back into partial production would be enabled to resume operations so that the whole sordid business of exporting crude and importing finished products in dubious transactions could be stopped.

In addition to NNPC, I have ordered for a complete audit of our other revenue generating agencies mainly CBN, FIRS, Customs, NCC, for better service delivery to the nation. Prudent housekeeping is needed now more than ever in view of the sharp decline in world market oil prices. It is a challenge we have to face squarely. But what counts is not so much what accrues but how we manage our resources that is important.
We have seen in the last few years how huge resources were mismanaged, squandered and wasted. The new APC government is embarking on a clean up, introducing prudence and probity in public financing.

At an early stage, the federal government addressed the issue of salary arrears in many states, a situation capable of degenerating into social unrest. The APC government stepped in to provide short-term support to the owing states and enabled them to pay off the backlog and restore the livelihood of millions of Nigerians.

Fellow Nigerians, there have been a lot of anxiety and impatience over the apparent delay in announcement of ministers. There is no cause to be anxious. Our government set out to do things methodically and properly. We received the handing over notes from the outgoing government only four days before taking over. Consequently, the Joda Transition Committee submitted its Report on the reorganization of Federal Government structure after studying the hand over notes. It would have been haphazard to announce ministers when the government had not finalized the number of ministries to optimally carry the burden of governance.

Anyway, the wait is over. The first set of names for ministerial nominees for confirmation has been sent to the senate. Subsequent lists will be forwarded in due course. Impatience is not a virtue. Order is more vital than speed. Careful and deliberate decisions after consultations get far better results. And better results for our country is what the APC government for CHANGE is all about.

I would like to end my address this morning on our agenda for CHANGE. Change does not just happen. You and I and all of us must appreciate that we all have our part to play if we want to bring CHANGE about. We must change our lawless habits, our attitude to public office and public trust. We must change our unruly behavior in schools, hospitals, market places, motor parks, on the roads, in homes and offices. To bring about change, we must change ourselves by being law-abiding citizens.

Happy Independence Celebrations. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. God Bless.

police outslaught against cultists claim octogenarian's life

Policemen

Police operation to contain cultists yesterday
allegedly claimed the life of an 83-year-old man in
Mgbuoshimiri community, Obio/Akpor local
government council of Rivers State.
President-General of Mgbuoshimiri Community
Council, Ohazurume Chukwu, who spoke to
journalists, said the man fell down, when the Police
invaded the venue where leaders and elders of the
community were holding a peace meeting.
However, the State Police Command has said that
normalcy has returned to Ogba/Ogbema/Ndoni
local government council after the cult clashes
there which claimed over 20 lives last week.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad
Muhammad, disclosed that massive police
personnel were deployed immediately to the area
to maintain order warning those engaged in
cultism to desist from their nefarious acts as the
command would not hesitate to arrest and
prosecute anyone found engaging in cult related
activities.
While confirming the incident at Mgbuoshimiri
community Muhammad said the matter was still
being investigated.
President-General of the Community, Chukwu,
disclosed that the Police were shooting into the air
at the venue of their meeting adding that the police
were apparently misinformed by some members of
the community that cultists were gathering there.
What happened was that, this morning, we were in
a meeting, when one Mini, Benson and Anele
(surnames withheld), came with some policemen,
to invade the venue of our meeting. And when we
tried to find out what the reasons are, the
policemen told us that these persons that I
mentioned told them that it was cult members that
were meeting.
And we told them that they can see it was
community that is meeting; and they insisted
because they have been induced. So, they insisted
that they have to arrest some persons; we said no;
whatever tis the problem that they should tell us.
So, in the cause of doing that, the policemen
started shooting at the instruction of the three
persons. They started shooting to the point that
the oldest man in the community, Elder Acho
Maxwell Chukwu; fell down and died as a result of
their shooting”, he narrated.
He called on the state Commissioner of Police,
Musa Kimo, to investigate the persons, who raised
the alarm and bring them to justice stressing that
“the problem is, some few greedy persons want to
eat the commonwealth of the community alone.”
They are the people that instigated the confusion;
and this problem has been for a while. The
agencies that are saddled with the responsibility of
bringing justice, when such a thing is done, should
swing into action and make sure that these three
persons pay for what they have done today. That
is the only way peace can come.
“I am calling for their arrest; I am calling for their
prosecution because they have committed murder.
These three persons have committed murdered.
They have killed a man of 83 years. They killed
him and they must be brought to justice”, he
stated.
It was however gathered that angry youths went on
rampage destroying property of those who were
alleged to have raised the false alarm

Pope francis arrives in US for his first ever visit

© FRANCE 24 screen grab | Pope Francis arrives at
the Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington
D.C. for his first-ever visit to the US on September
22, 2015

Pope Francis arrived in the United States on
Tuesday for his first visit – a historic six-day trip
to the spiritual home of capitalism after his tour of
communist-ruled Cuba.
The 78-year-old Argentine pontiff stepped onto US
soil for the first time at Andrews Air Force Base
outside Washington, where he was greeted by US
President Barack Obama and his family, as well as
Vice President Joe Biden.
US Catholic leaders and a select crowd of several
hundred well-wishers were on hand to greet the
pope, who wore his traditional papal whites and
waved to the cheering crowd.
A small group of children from Catholic schools in
the Washington area were brought forward to
welcome the pontiff.
Obama will host the Jesuit pope at the White
House on Wednesday. Francis will make two key
speeches during his visit, addressing the US
Congress on Thursday and the United Nations on
Friday.
On the plane from Cuba to the United States, the
pope told reporters that he would not specifically
raise Washington's embargo on Havana in his
speech before American lawmakers, but expressed
his opposition to it.
"The Holy See is against this embargo, but it is
against all embargos," he said.
Topics will include critiques of the dominance of
finance and technology; a condemnation of world
powers over the conflicts gripping the planet;
appeals to protect and welcome immigrants; and
climate change, according to Vatican sources.
The visit will take place under tight security, with
US authorities on top alert to handle the
complexities of protecting a pope who insists on
traveling in an open vehicle to be closer to the
masses.
Authorities are facing a particular security
headache in New York, where Francis plans to
criss-cross Manhattan at a time when 170 world
leaders will be in town for the UN General
Assembly.
He will preside over an inter-faith ceremony at
Ground Zero, visit a Harlem Catholic school and
greet crowds on a procession through Central
Park.
He will wrap up his trip Saturday and Sunday in
Philadelphia at an international festival of Catholic
families.
Anti-American pope?
The pope arrived from Cuba, where he visited three
cities in four days, said three masses before
adoring crowds and met President Raul Castro and
his big brother Fidel, the men who have ruled the
communist island since its 1959 revolution.
The pontiff, the first from Latin America, played a
key role in brokering the recent rapprochement
between Washington and Havana, which resulted in
the restoration of diplomatic ties in July after more
than half a century.
In the United States, he will find an American
public that widely respects him, but has a less
favorable view of the Catholic Church.
While 81 percent of Catholics have a positive view
of the Church, only fifty-five percent of Americans
as a whole do, according to a new poll conducted
by The Washington Post and ABC News earlier this
month.
But for some critics, the dominant themes of his
papacy – his critique of consumerism, calls to
embrace poverty and condemnation of a
"throwaway culture" – sound suspiciously like an
indictment of the American way of life.
That was underlined ahead of his trip when
Republican Congressman Paul Gosar, who is
Catholic, declared he would boycott the pontiff's
historic address to Congress to protest his "leftist"
views.
The pope has been active in urging compassion,
including for those historically shunned by the
Church, and for calling for action against economic
inequality and environmental degradation.
Americans in general approve of those efforts, with
54 percent wanting him to "continue as he has
been" and another 23 percent urging him to be
even more active.
'Build bridges'
During his Cuba visit, Francis discreetly refrained
from chastising the communist regime for its
crackdowns on dissidents and curbs on civil
liberties.
Before leaving the island on Tuesday, Francis said
mass in Cuba's second city Santiago, cradle of the
Castros' uprising against dictator Fulgencio Batista,
calling for a new kind of "revolution."
Speaking at a basilica to Our Lady of Charity of El
Cobre, Cuba's patron saint – a mixed-race Mary
that symbolizes the island's intertwined Spanish
and African roots – he praised her as the
embodiment of a "revolution of tenderness."
He urged Cubans to follow her example "to build
bridges, to break down walls, to sow seeds of
reconciliation," in comments that appeared to
allude to the nascent reconciliation across the
Florida Straits.
Francis then addressed an audience of families,
asking for their prayers as he prepares for a synod
on the family next month that has unleashed
internal conflicts among the Roman Catholic clergy
over sensitive issues such as divorce,
homosexuality and unmarried couples.

'Examplary' mario Ballotelli set for milan start

Mario Balotelli could make his first start since
returning to AC Milan as the Rossoneri travel to
Udinese on Tuesday looking to build on their gutsy
3-2 win over Palermo at the weekend.
Balotelli re-joined Milan on a season-long loan
deal last month after a disastrous year with
Liverpool, whom he joined in the summer of 2014
following a mitigated 18 months at the San Siro.
The 25-year-old has made two appearances so far
for Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side, coming off the bench
in the second half in the 1-0 derby defeat to Inter
Milan and then against Palermo on Saturday when
fellow striker Carlos Bacca hit a brace in a 3-2
victory over the Sicilians.
With Slovakian midfielder Juraj Kucka and defender
Ignazio Abate joining Milan’s growing casualty list,
Mihajlovic said on Monday he is set to ring the
changes for a trip north which he labelled
“difficult”.
That means Balotelli, who was ordered to adhere
to a strict list of rules by the Italian giants upon
his arrival last month, could start for Milan.
Despite having his driving licence suspended last
month for speeding in his Lamborghini at 90 km/h
in a 50 km/h zone, the striker has satisfied
Mihajlovic with his “exemplary” behaviour “on and
off the pitch”.
“Balotelli could start, but I haven’t decided yet.
There will be a few changes but I want to keep as
many of my regulars as possible,” said the
Serbian.
Asked if he thought Balotelli had changed,
Mihajlovic added: “I don’t know what he was like
before, I knew him when he was a 17-year-old at
Inter and now he’s 25.
“All I knew was what I read in the newspapers and
what I saw him do when he was playing. Up until
now, he’s been exemplary on and off the pitch.
“I can’t fault his behaviour, although I always
impress on him to improve.”
After failing to qualify for Europe this season,
seven-time European champions Milan are
desperate to turn their ailing fortunes around,
although the Rossoneri have won only two of their
four games so far.
With three goals in four matches it has been a
positive start for Bacca, but Mihajlovic warned the
Colombian striker not to rest on his laurels and
ordered Milan’s defence, having conceded six
times already, to plug the holes.
“I’m very demanding with myself and my players.
I’m never satisfied,” added Mihajlovic. “Bacca has
scored three goals, but he could have had more.”
He added: “Tomorrow our objective is to not
concede any goals. We know the areas in which
we need to improve.”

Several dead as severe floods hit Sierra Leone capital

At least seven people have died with hundreds
made homeless as swathes of Sierra Leone’s capital
were submerged by massive flooding after hours of
torrential rain, emergency management officials said
Thursday.
Residents described how waters destroyed their
homes, swept away household goods and damaged
vehicles as Freetown, an overcrowded city of 1.2
million, was pounded overnight.
“The seven corpses were brought in intermittently
overnight but we know that more will come,”
Amara Kamara, a mortuary attendant at the city’s
main Connaught Hospital, told AFP.
“The corpses include two kids aged three-and-a-
half and four, as well as a 10-year-old girl.”
It rains six months of the year in Freetown, one of
the world’s wettest cities, and putrid water from its
populated slopes inundate its coastal slums every
summer bringing cholera, dysentery and
respiratory infections.
At least 20 neighbourhoods were flooded by the
five-hour storm, according to a statement from the
presidency, which said torrential monsoon rain
was expected to continue for at least six days.
Police and soldiers were deployed to the worst-hit
areas to maintain law and order, it said, while
residents were being urged to stay at home.
A doctor told AFP rainwater had inundated six
wards in the Connaught, the country’s largest
hospital, forcing patients to be moved to makeshift
treatment areas.
“We were able to contain the situation as we
admitted over 100 people for abrasions, shock and
hypothermia, while about 40 were treated and
discharged,” a separate medical source told AFP.
Mohamed Sillah, a worker at the Brookfields
National Stadium, said over 600 people had sought
refuge by 7:30 am (0730 GMT).
The 45,000-capacity Brookfields, home to the
national football team, is one of two Freetown
sports grounds where emergency services were
telling people to seek refuge.
Sillah said emergency workers were distributing
drinks, bread and foam mattresses with women
and children being prioritised.

A thunder strike removed a filling station fuel tank that was buried under the ground.

The tank that was removed by the thunder

Around 4am on Tuesday morning 15/09/2015,a thunder stroke heavily in ugbokolo, one of Benue state L.G.A.

The sound of the thunder strike was so loud that it woke so many people living in the ugbokolo, though they all went to sleep because they taught it was just a normal thunder strike.
Around 7am that same morning news of the thunder strike was everywhere in the village but trust me,it wasn't just the thunder strike people in the village were talking about but the strange and unbelievable thing it caused: The thunder strike removed a filling station fuel tank buried inside the ground, strange isn't? I didn't believe it when they told me so I decided to visit the scene and see for myself cause seen is believing.

my doubt about the incident was quickly cleared when I visited the scene, really it's strange and so true.people that know the owner of the filling station very well said that it was his business rival that sent the thunder to remove and destroy the buried petrol tank, luckily for the owner of the filling station, the thunder didn't cause any serious damage to the tank or any property of the filling station exception of removing the tank from the ground. Right now some hole diggers are constructing the place so that they can bury it inorder for the filling station to start functioning again.

Popular Nollywood actress has got her bank account being investigated over the large sum she has in it.

Some people feel she has more than she should have or want to know her worth and thus the private investigation of her

She wrote: “Hahaha girls’ ehnnn, so someone somewhere actually thinks I show off a lot then decided to give herself the task of constantly checking my Gtb account via her friends to know my balance. Haba babe you shouldn’t be that dumb. Since you visit my page often, here, step up your game then next time, go for account statement & remember to check other banks too.”

California declares state of emergency as wildfires rage

PHOTO: getty

A state of emergency has been declared as raging wildfires spread in the northern part of drought-ridden California, possibly killing one person and forcing thousands to flee the flames.
More than 5,500 firefighters are struggling to contain the monster blazes that have charred more than 100,000 acres (40,470 hectares), authorities said, destroying hundreds of homes and commercial structures.

“There is a report of a fatality on the #ValleyFire,” CAL FIRE spokesman Daniel Berlant said on Twitter, adding that the information was being confirmed with the sheriff’s office.

Four firefighters suffered second-degree burns while battling the blaze, and are being treated in hospital.

Eight major fires are currently burning but two — the Valley Fire about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of the state capital Sacramento and the Butte Fire about 100 miles to the east — have been particularly damaging over the last week, with little let-up in sight.

Driven by dry conditions, high winds and soaring temperatures, the Butte Fire has burned 65,300 acres and was just 25 percent contained, while the Valley Fire had grown to 50,000 acres and was zero percent contained, state fire agency CAL FIRE said late Sunday.

The Valley Fire has destroyed about 400 homes and other structures and the Butte Fire some 135 homes, 79 outbuildings and four other structures.

They have also destroyed or forced the closure of highways.

“My heart goes out to all those who lost homes and businesses in the devastating fires in California,” Senator Barbara Boxer said in a tweet.

“Praying for the safety of all.”

Governor Jerry Brown issued an emergency proclamation for Lake and Napa counties — wine-producing regions north of San Francisco — due to the massive Valley Fire. Schools in the counties were scheduled to be closed Monday.

About 6,400 homes are still threatened by these monster fires, according to Berlant, though some evacuation orders linked to the Butte fire have been lifted.

Three other fires are scorching the earth in neighboring Oregon state and 10 further north in Washington state.

Nearly 70 firefighters from Australia and New Zealand are assisting fire services in the western United States.

– Costs soar, air quality drops –

A record drought that began four years ago is worsening the situation.

Berlant said that CAL FIRE has so far spent more than $212 million since July 1 to fight fires under its jurisdiction and that approximately 5,000 firefighters were currently assigned to major blazes.

The costs of containing other fires, such as those blazing in Sierra Nevada forests, are largely covered by federal agencies and not included in those figures.

The US Forest Service has spent an additional $1.31 billion battling fires and says it is approaching its record expenditure, from 2002, of $1.65 billion.

Brown’s state of emergency will release additional funds to cover the costs of the firefighting efforts.

National Guard troops have also been called in to help.

After a briefing on the Butte blaze, the governor’s emergency services chief said this summer’s fires were the most volatile he had ever seen.

“The fires are spreading faster than I have seen in my 30 years,” Mark Ghilarducci was quoted as saying by The Sacramento Bee newspaper.

Meanwhile, the state’s air quality has also taken a hit from the fires.

“As a result of the Valley Fire, combined with the drought conditions and other wildfires burning in the state, California’s air quality has significantly deteriorated,” the governor said in his emergency declaration.
